Colonial Office letter, No. 28880/1910, dated 14

October, 1910, enclosing copy of a despatch, No. 278,

dated 17th August, from the Government of Hong Kong with regard to the vacant post of Assistant Superin- tendent in the Botanical and Forestry Department,

Hong Kong.

2. In reply I beg to state that I shall be glad to recommend a suitable candidate for the appointment on the terms specified in the paper of particulars which accompanies Sir F. May's despatch if this should prove to be necessary. I observe, however, that in the despatch in question Sir F. May has suggested that the vacant post should be offered by His Lordship in the first instance to Mr. E. H. Wilson, and that the selection of a suitable officer by this office only appears to be contemplated in the event of Mr. Wilson declining His Lordship's offer. I further gather from the concluding paragraph of the letter now under reply that it is the wish of His Lordship to give effect to Sir F. May's suggestion.

3. In regard to the first portion of that suggestion I beg to say that it is one of singular felicity. The extreme importance of the work which
